Alexander McQueen At The Olympic Games Closing Ceremony

August 13, 2012 in News by Bernd Ruhl

The iconic British brand, Alexander McQueen’s collection dominated the most watched stage today. Some of the designer’s items took part in the closing ceremony of the Olympic games modeled by none other than Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell to name a few. Naomi Campbell strutted down the Union Jack shaped stage wearing gold embroidered and lacy gown paired with the rippled gold wedge, also by Alexander McQueen. Well, as you all know by now, McQueen never disappoints. It’s no surprise the label was one of the very few designers chosen to close the ceremony.

The wedge (featured below) are now on sale. Don’t miss it.

Saving Old/Boring Shoes: DIY Strassing

August 9, 2012 in News by Bernd Ruhl

Gone are the days of discarding old worn out or boring shoes. Nowadays, they can be brought to life and revamped into a whole new pair, as if brand new, fresh out of the box. Old or boring shoes can be reborn again simply by applying glittery sparkles in their surface. This can be done in many designs and colors.

The industry term to this art is called “Strassing.” You’ve probably seen many high end designs billing $5000 and up for a pair of shoes simply because of the added strassed work. You need not shell out such an amount provided you are willing to send the extensive and tedious time gluing each crystal on the shoe and of course purchasing good quality crystals and not just the dull glass type. Yes, they do vary.

This topic was covered extensively in the July-September 2012 print edition of Shoeholics Magazine. Featured in the article is a before and after picture of the world famous trademark Tribute shoes by Yves Saint Laurent. It was converted from a plain $795 black suede pumps to something entirely different with sparkly genuine Swarovski crystals, a pair worth it’s own appearance on any red carpet with the right dress! This of course adds value of at least $3000 to the pair simply due to the time spent, quality and close knit crystals. It does add up.

Editor Tinu spent more than 68 hours working on the pair just in time for the photoshoot!

Also featured farther below is a sample by Wedding bee. She converted her plain jane Brian Atwood white satin shoes into something of a spectacular when she could not afford the price of $3400 in stores. She saved money by doing it herself. This is “sport” applicable to men and women. We have seen men strassing their sneakers too! Who doesn’t like an upgrade?

So if you have a pair, got the time, got a fat mortgage and car note to pay but want a pair badly, start gluing!

Hang On To Your Lips! They Keep Making A Comeback!

August 6, 2012 in News by Bernd Ruhl

Isn’t it amazing how fashion repeats itself? One should be smart by now not to discard their hard to find collectibles. These lip shoes are good indications of that fact the lips and face themed design shoes are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Charlotte Olympia are just a handful of designers who have dabbled in the lip/face theme in their shoe collection. One could only imagine how far back this trend has been around and most definitely will make a return in the near future. So, hang on to your lips and faces ladies!

Desigining With A Patriotic Spirit

August 3, 2012 in News by Bernd Ruhl

The world is high on patriotic spirit thanks to the highly successful Olympics in London at the moment. Shoe designers (at least the smart ones) have taken to their sketch pads to join the patriotic bandwagon by crafting shoes to commemorate highly publicized events in their respective countries or just for a country they admire. We have taken into consideration to highlight some of our favorites. Just by looking at their images you can easily tell which countries they represent.

British designer, Aruna Seth got an early start with the Union Jack Swarovski crystal design wedges to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s golden jubilee while Mugnai opted to craft the heels of his sandals in the shape of France’s world famous Eiffel Tower. Italian designer Massimo Dogana didn’t miss a beat to fly his country’s flag high on his platform sandals. We also stumbled into some “mixed breed” designs where 2 or more country’s flags share a sandal.

This is the time to start grabbing them before they are long gone or sold out. Better to have the real thing nicely placed on a mantle than to stare at the images! They would make great collectibles for any die hard patriotic shoe collector anywhere. Keep up the patriotic spirit, be a good citizen! 🙂

Kate Middleton’s Monochrome Ensemble

August 1, 2012 in News by Bernd Ruhl

While the trend is all about color blocking at the moment, Kate Middleton begged to differ, opting to step out in a more monochromatic ensemble in her much loved, twice recycled Serbian born designer Roksanda IIincic’s knee length, dove gray color dress to attend a Creative Industries reception at the Royal Academy of Arts in London’s Piccadilly yesterday nicely done with a closely matching pair of shoes.

…and she wore the same dress to in July 2011, on her first tour to the United States with Prince William. Only this time, styled with her hair cascading down her shoulders and paired with what is now her trademark nude colored pair of heels. Beautiful!

Designer Lislie Yeung, One To Watch

July 31, 2012 in News, Shoes We Love by Bernd Ruhl

A rare and unique design concept we uncovered in a quaint little shoe store, Ruia in SOHO, New York City. Among the carefully selected and well juried shoes on offer for sale is the little known UK based designer Lislie Yeung, which we can proudly say you heard of the name here first. Word is she only does designing on the side and in limited edition for small boutiques like Ruia, a couture collection of shoes for lack of better word. This is not a label you will find just anywhere, this makes it all the more appealing to die hard collectors worldwide.

Featured here is one of her only 2 designs of delicate lace pumps with a functioning back zipper! How cool is that? We can honestly say we have never seen anything quite like it before. This is ultra feminine chic at best. If only we could convince Lislie Yueng to make designing her own line of shoes a full time job and make a wide range of shoes for us collectors. Please get the word to her, we want to see more from you darling! These are beyond adorable! J’adore!

July 30, 2012 in News, Uncategorized by Bernd Ruhl

Jennifer lopez, mother of 2 seems to be holding her own pretty well against a younger counterpart, Kim Kardashian in a form fitting low backdrop Tom Ford number.

It is however tough to determine her ensemble against the equally mega style maven Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham featured further below in her own design. Shoes, dress, accessories, hair style… now to determine who work “it” best? Tough one. You make the call. Go for it!
