Reflecting our global readership, we look to Maikos and Geishas in Japan for inspiration!
Kyoto is bursting with colors, beautiful kimonos adorning women in the streets, dainty Geishas, aspiring Maikos and ordinary Japanese women of every age who seize the moment to shine against the ancient world heritage landmarked backdrop, justly proud of their cultures and traditions.
Among the throngs, we get glimpses of modern shoe fashion peeking out from under traditional attire, leather sandals, platforms, wedges, and colorful heels.
And for the gentlemen, we look to the urban feel of walls festooned in the art of graffiti depicting life on the street. These serve as the backdrop to our feature on men’s look in this issue. Where else but in New York City can you see anything like these!
Summer is still scotching hot! So be sure to be on a deck chair by the ocean with a dazzling pair of bare sandals (like those featured in this issue, and for the guys –nice leather sandals) on your feet! Happy summer!

According to DailyMail: British actress Emily Blunt has led criticism of the Cannes Film Festival after it emerged women not wearing high heels were being denied entry to screenings. The row erupted today after it was claimed several women in their 50s, some with medical conditions, were barred from entering the screening of the lesbian romance Carol starring Cate Blanchett.
After initial reports surfaced of the so-called heels policy, many others in attendance at the glamorous festival revealed they had experienced similar treatment.
This included British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, the director of the Amy Winehouse film Amy, who tweeted that his wife had problems gaining entry, but was eventually allowed in.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blunt said news of women being denied entry was ‘very disappointing’.
She said: ‘Everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn’t wear high heels anyway, that’s my point of view.
‘You kind of think that there’s these new waves of equality and waves of people realising that women are just as fascinating and interesting to watch, and bankable.’
Denis Villeneuve, the director of Sicario in which Emily Blunt stars, was also planning his own protest, jokingly telling a press conference that he, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin would walk the steps in high heels.
Festival organisers have since moved to deny claims high heels are obligatory, with director Thierry Fremaux tweeting that rumours women must wear heels on the steps are ‘unfounded’.
A spokesperson told the BBC: ‘Rules have not changed throughout the years (tuxedo, formal dress for gala screenings) and there is no specific mention about the height of the women’s heels as well as for men’s.’
Screen wrote that a group of women in their 50s, some of which were suffering medical conditions, were denied access to the film Carol because they were wearing rhinestone flats.
A source told the outlet: ‘I’ve heard this happening several times now, even to older women who can’t wear heels for medical reasons. It’s b*******.
‘Someone I know was turned away for wearing nice flats, nothing you would wear to the beach. They told her she could go and buy appropriate shoes and come back.’
Ironically, the controversy comes as the subject of women in film is discussed avidly at the festival.
Over the past year, numerous high-profile women in film have publicly addressed the gender gap in cinema, urging it to be narrowed and to provide more women with opportunities both on and behind the camera.
Well, here’s our 2 cents to the matter at Shoeholics. We say the men should parade about in staggering heels too! Now that’ll be a sight.

Join us in welcoming Ashley Chennel to Shoeholics as the Beauty Editor!
For the last three years Ashley Chennel has been making a name for herself in the beauty industry. You may recognize her from some of your favorite beauty videos on YouTube. What some of you may not know is, Ashley has accomplished a lot more than what you’ve seen on her YouTube channel.
Born and raised in Voorhees, NJ, Ashley began her career shortly after graduating from The Connecticut School of Broadcasting. After graduating, Ashley landed her first internship at Radio One Philadelphia. During her Internship at Radio One, Ashley interned for all three stations including Philly’s Hot 107.9, 100.3 WRNB, and Praise 103.9. Shortly after Radio One, Ashley began her second internship at The Rachael Ray Show where she made her first TV debut as one of Rachael’s Yummettes! During her internship at The Rachael Ray Show, Ashley was given the opportunity to design jewelry for Rachael Ray. Designing jewelry sparked a fire in Ashley, which inspired her to start her own jewelry line. Ashley’s next internship was at Vh1 in the on air/ off air promos department. At Vh1 Ashley was given the opportunity to exercise her skills as a producer by co-producing a promo for the shows on Vh1. The promo never aired but is listed in her video gallery. Her last internship was at BET’s 106 and Park. Ashley then decided to take her love for television to YouTube. In 2011 Ashley launched her own YouTube channel, where she started making videos about virgin hair. Making YouTube videos later led to product reviews and fashion videos. It wasn’t until one of her hair videos went viral in 2012 that she started to develop an audience on YouTube. People began requesting more hair videos from Ashley. As a result, her YouTube popularity began to grow and companies began to contact her to review their products. Because of Ashley’s background in television and YouTube beauty videos Ashley landed herself a spot as a commentator on the popular Style Network reality show Jerseylicious. Due to the high volume in questions about virgin hair Ashley receives, she decided to start her own virgin hair company. In 2013 Ashley Chennel launched Ashley Chennel Virgin Hair LLC. Ashley’s YouTube channel now features videos about her own virgin hairline. There is still more to come from Ashley as she begins to Brand herself a media mogul and YouTube Beauty guru! Look out for our beauty columns in Shoeholics magazine starting with the July-Sept 2015 issue.
