Shoe Obsession exhibit at the MFIT

Finally! A museum exhibit made just for us! The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) teamed up with mega department store Saks to present a world class “Shoe Obsession” exhibit highlighting shoe collection from major and independent designers worldwide. The collection includes highly sort after (by die hard collectors) styles by Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Nicholas Kirkwood, Manolo Blahnik, Giuseppe Zanotti et. al. And who knew Nina Ricci did heeless shoes at one point. That took us by surprise.

The exhibit was well timed to coincide with New York Fashion Week, just when most fashionistas, stylist and editors are in the city to take in the runway shows. The collection includes designs that have been worn by Lady Gaga; the iconic Manolo Blahnik blue satin pumps Mr. Bigs used to pop the question to Carrie in the hit show Sex & The City; iconic designs by Alexander McQueen on loan from Daphne Guinness; Marie Antoinette inspired styles by Christian Dior; edgy, futuristic and architectural inspired designs by Masaya Kushino; and skeletal styles by Janina Alleyne; just to name a few.

This is a must-see event by all shoe collectors worth their weight in gold, same goes for aspiring shoe designers looking for ideas and inspirations. The museum invited editors of Shoeholics magazine to the press preview day and had a hard time kicking us out of the room after closing hours. Just about all of the invited press officials couldn’t get enough. One of them literally stuck her tongue out to “taste the rainbow” so to speak when she saw a giant poster of a fetish shoe (see picture below). We were all in our elements, die hard shoe addicts camouflaged as “press” and what have you. We all had one more picture or two to take beyond the cut off time. Overstaying our welcome would be an understatement.

If you are not in town for fashion week, seeing this show is definitely worth jumping on a long flight heading straight to the city, you won’t be sorry. The exhibit is officially open from February 8 until April 13, 2013. There is one good thing about this event. You get to leave your credit cards at home to gawk at some of the most artistically well-crafted shoes on the planet. It is absolutely FREE to get in! For more, visit Fitnyc.edu/museum

Gladiator Boots With Strong Roman Influence

February 5, 2013 in News, Shoes We Love, Women by Bernd Ruhl

We predicted this sometime in the fall of 2012 that the gladiator sandals and boots will be all over the fashion scene this spring. Besides Tom Ford’s gladiator version on Anne Hathaway we posted here a few weeks ago, designer has proved us right –yet again. His version is equally as powerful as the others except this time, with an almost tribal or shall we say, a strong Roman influence. The elaborate beaded patches shine on this must-have gladiator silhouette in sumptuous Italian leather could very well send us running for the stores to grab a pair! They are just gorgeous!

The Power Of The Sole

January 28, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

When next you set out to get a new pair of shoes, don’t ignore the details of the soles. Although the soles are located underneath the shoes, they can be equally as powerful as the shoe itself. In some cases, it could very well be the most interesting part of the entire shoe design and the last to be seen when you walk away.

You want to leave your guests and admirers wanting more when you exit a room with their eyes still gazing at your feet!

Prada Jumps On The Spike Bandwagon

January 26, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

Spike shoes are not going away anytime soon. You’ve seen just about every shoe designer under the sun ventured into the spike frenzy with the exception of a handful like Manolo Blahnik, Nicholas Kirkwood, Chanel, Dior and a few other classic designers.  We even got used to seeing the look with certain designers who have been doing it for a few seasons now, the likes of Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin, Zara, Valentino et. al. And just when you thought the trend has been overdone and tired and should die down at any moment, the fashion forward brand Prada jumps on the saturated bandwagon of all things spiked by launching a collection of spiked shoes for men and women! So if you are a big collector of all things spiked and happen to be a fan of Prada shoes, you now have your prayer answered with both in one. Be on the look out for these styles in the spring-summer 2013 collection.

Appropriate Shoes For A Presidential Inauguration

January 22, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

January 21, 2013 is Martin Luther king’s Day, a national holiday in the US which also served as the 2nd term swearing in of President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden into office. Inauguration day involves a lot of standing and walking about and we think the Obama’s got it right! First Lady Michelle Obama wore pumps with just the right heel height while her lovely young girls…now ladies with great fashion sense, wore adorable flats accompanied by their grandmother who also dazzled in age appropriate pumps. Joe Biden’s wife, Jill looked so chic and elegant in gray colored coat and knee length boots! J’adore!

And what can we say about the President’s Oxford shoes? Fabulous!

We wish both the Obamas and Bidens all the best in their second term in office. They have worked so hard to come this far. Of course, we can’t wait to see more from the lovely ladies.

January 17, 2013 in News, Shoes We Love, Wearable Art, Women by Bernd Ruhl

Giuseppe Zanotti does it again. This time taking the spike lead in pink for spring-summer  2013. It is actually adorable. If you didn’t love the more demure model from 2012, you may fall head over heels in love with the white leather pink spiked version.
