Billionaire Sir Richard Branson In Heels!

May 14, 2013 in Causes, News by Bernd Ruhl

He might be one of the most powerful men in the world, but Sir Richard Branson was the brunt of a thousand jokes a few days ago as he donned a skirt and a full face of make-up on a flight to Malaysia.
The billionaire entrepreneur swapped his boxer shorts for a pair of stockings after losing a Grand Prix bet with AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandez two years ago.
The Virgin boss – who even shaved his legs for the flight – served drinks and pledged to clean the toilets on the special flight – all while sporting the red AirAsia uniform, which included a skirt suit and crisp white shirt.

All for a good cause of course. The funds from the flight went to the Starlight Foundation for ill children. It’s nice to see the best of them willing to go through great lengths for a good cause. Hear! Hear! Sir Branson! You look FABULOUS!

‘I’ve done some outrageous things in my time but this will be up there with the best of them,’ Branson added before he boarded. ‘I’ve just got to practice walking in high heels first’. –Sir Richard Branson.

Rihanna Rocks The Gladiators

May 3, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

Rihanna, the “Shine Bright Like A Diamond” singer rocked Tom Ford gladiators yesterday in New York City on a dinner date with some friends. The shoes are this season’s must have and highly sort after foot eye candy. She paired them with 13 pricey diamond pieces by Jennifer Fisher dangling from her wrists and fingers. We don’t mind the Mary Katrantzou leather shirt either. She looked like a million bucks! Gorgeous!

Great Gatsby, Art Deco, Gowns, Shoes….It’s Bridal Week!

April 21, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

In celebration of Shoeholics magazine bridal/spring issue, our editors checked out the Bridal Week fashion shows and presentations to see some of the gowns and accessories on behalf of our members already pages deep reading the bridal issue for inspirations. Bridal ateliers at the show did not disappoint at all. Many of the designs on hand were heavily inspired by the art deco style seen in the love/thriller fantasy “Great Gatsby” movie trailer starring Leonardo Dicaprio, which hits the theaters early May 2013. Other notable styles are the traditional Cinderella and slightly updated classic demure cuts. Not only would some of these selections be suitable for a wedding, they could also easily pass for a black-tie gala gowns long after they have been used for their purpose as a wedding gown. Some of you have plans to change 2 to 3 times on your big day. Then you are in luck, this season offers a lot of concepts and styles you can’t resist. Overall, it’s a great investment to consider!

Soon to hit bridal stores worldwide, featured below are some of our editors’ pick of the season. Any of these styles would complement a nice pair of shoes for the traditional walk down the altar, the first dance, beach wedding, or just to wear to a nice spring/summer gala. Just remember to start with the most important part of your entire ensemble –the shoes! Pick your choice of footwear by reading the “10 tips for picking the right bridal footwear” article in the magazine and work your way up to selecting the right dress. Go with your heart and everything else will fall into place.

After checking out these gorgeous creations, be sure to see how you can win a free of shoes here!

April 16, 2013 in Causes, News by Bernd Ruhl

Women and a few brave men will do anything to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network in Abilene, Texas. Even run in heels! The High Heel Dash is a competition with prize money offered to the top 3 winners and souvenirs given to all participants. The 0.6 mile race took place at Shotwell Stadium Parking Lot on April 13, 2013. A portion of the proceeds benefits Children’s Miracle Network.

The rules of the game included wearing suitable 2 inch minimum high heel shoes! No flats, wedges, boots, chunky platforms, or self-modified shoes were allowed. All racing shoes were checked and measured at the check-in tent! So, there was no getting around the required high heels!

Kinky Boots Rules Broadway!

April 7, 2013 in News by Bernd Ruhl

557892_10151618663956654_1316912280_n

If you’re Broadway bound, as a die hard shoe lover there is one must-see show this season –Kinky Boots! Yeah, you read right. Kinky Boots, the movie from a few years ago starring Golden Globe Awards nominee, British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, is a major buzz now playing in theaters on Broadway!

Shoeholics magazine was invited to the press presentation day and opening night. Like anyone else who had seen the movie before we were curious to see what the theater version would look like. Forget the fact that legendary singer Cindy Lauper is the music composer or that Harvey Fierstein is the playright –we simply had to see the boots! During the presentation, we had the honor of meeting the man behind the helms of making the stage costumes. The award winning costume designer, Gregg Barnes was more than happy to share some of his sketches with us prior to the opening night. He drew from the likes of the late Alexander McQueen’s tartan collection from a few years ago and iconic cartoon characters from New Yorker magazine covers for inspiration, among many other things.

Gregg spiced up the costumes a bit more with vibrant colors and sparkles, appropriate concept for theater which also helps to bring out the energy in the actors wearing them on stage. He then collaborated with New York based shoe manufacturers LaDuca and T.O. Dey to bring the colorful jaw dropping boot sketches to life while baring in mind the need for the stage dancers and actors to move easily with comfort during their performances. Like many designers, Gregg was faced with many disappointments of heel breaking during production until he was able to get it right after many prototypes. Nobody wants to see disgruntled actors live on stage as a result of tight shoes and broken heels! Gregg was persistent on getting it right. Judging from what we witnessed at yesterday’s full press preview, the result was spectacular! It’s one thing to see a colorful sketch on paper but it’s a different matter to see it live moving about right before your eyes.

The entire show was beyond what we had expected. Billy Porter’s character as Lola was a complete mirror image of Chiwetel Ejiofor right down to his voice! Stark Sands as Charlie Price had the audience near tears during his heart wrenching solo performance when he gave up on the factory. Speaking of solo performance, Billy Porter’s drag queen character brought the house down with his near resemblance of Jennifer Hudson’s groundbreaking solo performance in the movie “Dream Girls“. At one point we completely forgot Billy Porter is a man in a dress and thought he could easily play the late singer Whitney Houston in a movie biopic! Yes, the man can sing!

67807_10151618676461654_2114283669_n

Actors Billy Porter as Lola and Stark Sands as Charlie Price

By the end of the show, the entire theater was on their feet in thunderous applause. If any of them had any hangups about drag queens or transvestites before seeing the show, it was long forgotten by the time they left the building. On life imitating art, vanity aside: a lot can be learned from the show, for each and everyone of us to be more open minded and respect each other unconditionally!

The show is indeed “Gone with the boots FABULOUS!” Check out the show!

Speaking on behalf of all Shoeholics who would end up seeing this show and have to leave the theater salivating over the boots. The show leaves one wanting more, especially after seeing the endless parade of couture looking boots that closed the show! Here’s a free advice for the producers: The show to consider its own line of boots for sale and we would be the first in line armed with our credit cards to scoop up every pair without bating an eyelid! Broadway shows are known to sell just about anything from their shows as souvenirs at the theaters to guests. So why not Kinky Boots? Producers, can you hear the cash register ringing and this idea being a great source of more revenue? We hope you are reading this. *Hint*

Remember, your shoes are the only things connecting you to earth during that emotional day! Our models: Christopher Minaya (a former US Marine Corps Captain recently voted as P.Diddy’s Ciroc first military ambassador) and Brittany Erler (Major Model Management) certainly played the part well by representing the perfect couple in our bridal themed editorials.
